Film Review: The Crooked Man Is About To Get Straightened Out By Hellboy

Hellboy: The Crooked Man brings back that demonic superhero who is sometimes known as Big Red. Too bad Hellboy couldn’t return to a more coherent script. Brian Taylor is the director working from a script he had co-written with Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola. Mignola is the creator of Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics.

Jack Kesy has taken over the role which was previously played by Roy Perlman and David Harbour. The cast also includes Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, and Leah McNamara.

The year is 1959, and Hellboy and a young agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense are on a train taking some strange supernatural spider to their headquarters. The spider suddenly grows to a massive size and initiates a wreck that enables its escape. As Hellboy and Bobbie Jo Song try to retrieve the eight-legged menace, they realize that another supernatural force is in the rural Appalachian region. The encounter a local resident named Tom who once indulged in witchcraft. A malevolent being known as the Crooked Man has returned. Hellboy and his young partner are drawn into another strange battle with demonic forces.

Perlman remains the best version of this character. Kesy is not a terrible lead actor, but the script is rather confusing and doesn’t serve him well. Also, I would have no idea that this was taking place in 1959 if it weren’t for the notice at the beginning of the film.

This also did not seem to have had a comparable production budget as the previous installments. I can normally handle somewhat subpar special effects if the script made more sense.

The film ended up being a bit of a jumble. Hellboy’s wisecracks don’t land as effectively as in other films.

Hellboy fans will likely be pleased that another film is out there, and it really isn’t that terrible. It’s an adequate diversion but a very forgettable one in spite of the distinctiveness of Hellboy’s appearance.

Book Review: Holly Has Someone to Find And Has To Play For Keeps

Stephen King continues his literary reign of terror in Holly, which was first published in 2023. King revisits a character who was first introduced in what is known as the Bill Hodges trilogy which began with Mr. Mercedes.

Holly Gibney has inherited the Finders Keepers Detective Agency from her friend and mentor, Bill Hodges. She is coping with her mother’s death from COVID and learns some troubling secrets that were kept from her. A desperate mother has shown up at her office and wants to hire her to locate her missing daughter. The investigation places Holly on a collision course with two very old, very strange professors with horrific appetites. Rodney and Emily Harris are trying to stave off the consequences and ravages of old age and are testing out some troubling theories to do just that. Holly has already faced down some monstrous killers, but the Harrises may indeed the most horrific of the bunch.

King has indicated a deep affection for this character and is featuring her in an upcoming novel. I am, not quite as enamored with this one at first, but as the confrontation with the Harrises comes to a head, King still has me rooting for her. I had some trouble staying interested in this one for a while, however I got a bit more engage when Holly picks up their trail, and it was becoming clearer as to what the Harrises were actually doing.

King does make some of his political leanings a bit more obvious than I remember him doing in previous works, so that was also a little distracting. I, of course, know he and I would disagree sharply on many issues including decisions made during the COVID lockdowns, but I do believe him to be a talented and interesting writer.

King is good enough to keep me from actually hating his novels, and Holly herself shows some grit that I ended up ultimately respecting.

I don’t consider this to be one of King’s greatest efforts, but the climax of the story was just exciting enough to keep me from hating it. There is even some hope that I will end up liking Holly Gibney a bit more if I decide to read her next adventure.

So, the unending literary journey continues with a more recent voice as I return to the imagination of Freida McFadden through the pages of Never Lie.

Film Review: Charlie Heller Is No Natural Born Killer, But He Can Learn

The Amateur just manages to be one of the better films to be released early in 2025 with Rami Malek putting forth a heartfelt performance as CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller, who launches a campaign to avenge the murder of his wife, which will lead him to acquire a different set of abilities. James Hawes is the director of this film, which was written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli. It is based on a novel written in 1981 by Robert Littell.

The cast is a formidable one that includes Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, and Caitriona Balfe.

Charlie Heller is a mild-mannered, ingenious, and somewhat socially awkward CIA nerd who somehow managed to snag a beautiful, charming wife played quite convincingly by Brosnahan, who is about to leave for London on a business trip. Sarah Heller is gunned down in a terrorist attack, which prompts the grieving Charlie to use his smarts to identify the murderers. He is more than a little disappointed when he finds that his colleagues aren’t too willing to move on the information he has provided. He decides to take matter into his own hands and gain the training he needs to accomplish his lethal desire for justice. The point is driven home that he does not quite have the necessary fortitude to be a stone-cold killer. He does have other skills and knowledge that could be of use, however. The superiors in the agency have still misjudged Heller’s determination and talents, and they may eventually regret now working with him. Heller has four suspects to hunt down and is on a dangerous path to confront the man who pulled the trigger.

I thought this was a pretty good film even if the plot seems as old as Time itself. Malek’s performance did evoke more than a little sympathy for his character’s loss, but I am a bit of a sucker for a good revenge plot.

The film does have some great scenery throughout since Heller has quite a bit of traveling to do. There is not much time devoted to clearly explain how Heller was able to get his hands on some of the utensils he acquired to pull off his plan. Still, some of these plot holes are not significant enough to keep me from finding enjoyment in this release.

Malek is a talented actor and appears to be a solid casting choice for this role. I have no real criticism of any of the performances themselves, so that’s a plus.

I had some issues with the editing, which I am finding to be a more common observation in the recent movies I have viewed. The shifts in scenery were a bit jarring at times.

The plot is implausible and relies on a few annoying coincidences, but again it manages to not seem too over the top.

The movie is not the greatest spy thriller of all time, but it’s a long way from the bottom of the barrel and worth the time to kick back with a favorite snack and see how far Charlie will go for vengeance.

Doctor Who Audio Review: The Destiny Of Mondas Revisited

Doctor Who: Genesis of the Cybermen is an audio drama from Big Finish Productions that revisits the origins of the Cybermen, a feat accomplished already in a previous release entitled Spare Parts. This story was originally conceived by Gerry Davis and adapted by David K. Barnes. Peter Davison returns yet again to the role of the Fifth Doctor and is accompanied by Janet Fielding as Tegan, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, and Matthew Waterhouse as Adric. The director is David O’Mahoney. Nicholas Briggs again fires up the voice modulator to portray the Daleks. The remainder of the guest cast is comprised of Michael Abubakar, Nuhazet Diaz Cano, Kelly Price, Colin Tierney, and Evie Ward-Drummond.

The TARDIS has crashed on a world where a king is dying, and one of his sons is trying to save his civilization from a catastrophic shift in the planet’s orbit. The Doctor and his friends offer their help, but he soon realizes that he has arrived on the planet of Mondas at the birth of one of his greatest foes. The Cybermen are about to rise yet again and plan to survive by any means necessary.

This release is one in the range known as The Lost Stories. It was a script that was considered for the television series many moons ago and was ultimately scrapped.

Although this one isn’t bad, I still prefer Spare Parts. Genesis of the Cybermen is still worthy of a purchase and a listen though. The performances of the main cast members remain strong and distinctive. Davison still puts in a compelling performance even is he sounds noticeably older than he did forty years ago. The banter between the main cast is still compelling and amusing at times.

The guest cast is also well-chosen as is usually the case. Colin Tierney in particular has a complex role as the one who is fiercely loyal to this people and creates the Cybermen, one of the most horrific races in Doctor Who lore. It’s a suitably complicated story without going overboard. There are some interesting themes involving family and leadership explored.

The descriptions conveyed of the conversion process to become a Cybermen are as horrific as ever. Genesis of the Cybermen still does better than merely getting the job done as a source of entertainment. More Fifth Doctor is never a bad thing anyway.

Book Review: A Most Peculiar Adoption

Unto Us a Son Is Given by Donna Leon is not one of the better novels featuring Venetian Commissario Guido Brunetti. It was first published in 2019.

Brunetti is invited by his father-in–law to a drink because he wants to lay out a concern over an old friend. An elderly art connoisseur in Venice is wanting to adopt a young man, and there does not appear to be much of a rational explanation for this move. Brunetti is asked to look into it and see if this young man has any trouble in his past. Brunetti agrees to take a look into it even though this isn’t his usual type of investigation. The old man drops dead in the street leaving the young stranger as an heir to his estate. Brunetti is back on familiar territory when another friend of the old man’s is strangled to death. He finds that the people in his life have more complicated pasts than even he realizes.

Leon describes the setting of Venice in loving and captivating detail. Brunetti is a pretty interesting protagonist with a stable family life.

Leon’s prose style is certainly distinctive and more than adequately displays her natural talent.

The problem I have with this novel is that it really seems to take a while for anything that interesting. The first death doesn’t occur until around halfway through the book. The murder takes a bit longer. It’s just kind of a slow book.

The plot itself is rather interesting, but it just takes too long to get moving. Leon herself is still a writer worth checking out, and I am sure it will not be too long before I look in on Guido Brunetti, his family, and fellow police officers.

The next selection on the reading queue is Holly by Stephen King.

Book Review: Chief Inspector Gamache Finds The Devils Even In Paris

All the Devils Are Here by Louise Penny is an intriguing entry into her mystery series featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who would usually be investigating all manner of violent wrongdoings in Quebec. This time, murder strikes his family vacation in Paris, and Gamache finds that he is never really off duty, especially when the devils strike too close to home.

“Hell is empty, and all the devils are here” is a line from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and I think Penny has struck gold with the title of this particular thriller. She also been writing about Gamache and his family for a lot of years. Although this is my first indulgence with this series, I elected to jump in with one of the more recent installments, so the background is not immediately clear to me.

The trouble starts off when Gamache’s ninety-three-year-old godfather, Stephen Horowitz, is struck down in the street and is sent into a coma in front of the other family members. Gamache and his wife find a key to a ritzy hotel suite where they find a body. Apparently, Horowitz has been keeping some dangerous secrets over his many decades, and it’s unclear as if he is on the side of the angels or the devils. Gamache and his whole family, some of whom have moved to Paris from Quebec, face suspicion from the Parisian investigators. Gamache finds that there may be a deep corruption rotting the souls of those he should trust the most.

Penny is without question a talented writer, and she has created a very likable character that deserves to endure through several more novels.

Her description of Paris is quite compelling. I like the family dynamics even if Gamache has an unexplained estrangement with his son, which does actually get explained in this entry. Gamache is a tough dude, but he does have a unique sensitivity not often found in many crime fiction protagonists. I love his fierce loyalty to his family and his unwavering devotion to his son, Daniel, even when there is some reason to question his intentions.

I had a little trouble following the story because there were some flashback moments that were a little hard to follow at times. Specifically, the climax of the story was apparently not related sequentially.

I also had some trouble because much of the past capers were referenced, and I was missing some context, but that was probably more due to my erratic reading habits than any fault of Penny’s.

Anyway, this is a perfectly enjoyable thriller, although the reader would probably get more out of reading the series in order. I may not follow my own advice on that, but I can pretty much guarantee that this is not my last foray into the works of Louise Penny.

It has been a while, but I think it’s time to take a literary journey to Venice and check in on Commissario Guido Brunetti who has another murder to solve in Donna Leon’s Unto Us a Son Is Given.

Doctor Who Audio Review: Ghost Safaris And Stolen Memories

The range of Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas featuring the Fourth Doctor continue with the latest satisfying release entitled The Hellwood Inheritance. Tom Baker and Louise Jameson reunite as the Doctor and Leela, respectively, for two stories contained in this set. Ken Bentley and Jamie Anderson share directing duties. Both stories turn out pretty well, but with Baker and Jameson in the lead, that’s going to be a likely outcome.

Alan Barnes starts off with a bit of spookiness in The Hellwood Inheritance. The guest cast includes Rosie Day, Chris Jarman, Richard James, James Meteyard, and Tamzin Outhwaite.

The Doctor and Leela arrive on the grounds of Hellwood Manor where they have a troubling encounter with a headless knight that pursues them through the grounds. After that escape, they meet the architects of what is planned to be a ghost safari and shown the “ghost catcher”. The Doctor is not sure that he is being told the whole truth about what powers the device, and a more sinister plot than a mere supernatural entertainment park is revealed.

I wouldn’t call this a real standout story, but it gets the job done as far as being entertaining. Tom Baker still sounds strong and engaged in the role even though he is close to his ninth decade at the time of recording. Jameson still slips into her most well-known character with ease.

I love a good ghost story in Doctor Who, and this fits the bill. There are not many scares or chilling moments, but the humor makes up for it. The performances are solid enough. The writing is not all that bad. Barnes has been associated with Big Finish and Doctor Who for some time, and his reliability as a writer remains evident here.

The episode still falls a little short of what I think would be among the more highly regarded stories in the range, but it still shouldn’t be overlooked. Tom Baker is well into his nineties here, so I am cherishing every new performance I can get.

The Memory Thieves is written by Phil Mulryne. The guest cast includes Daisy Ashford, Ayesha Antoine, and Wayne Forester.

The TARDIS arrives on a colony world in the future where strange pulses emanate from the forest, and the colonists lose their memories. The Doctor and Leela are separated by an earthquake. They have to earn the trust of the colonists in order to help them stop the force known as the Abeyance.

I had some trouble getting into this one. Baker and Jameson are still worth the time, but I didn’t find the story all that interesting. It’s not a terrible effort by Mulryne, but I did not find this particular contribution all that memorable.

It’s always fun to get some new stories with the Fourth Doctor and Leela, and this particular set was entertaining enough for me to still recommend to my fellow Whovians to give it a go.

Film Review: Hijackers And Vampires Do Not Play Well Together

Blood Red Sky is a pretty interesting horror action film directed by Peter Thorwarth, who also cowrote the script alongside Stefan Holtz. It concerns a mother who is soon revealed to be a vampire on her way to America for treatment. The flight gets interrupted when the flight is hijacked, and the mother is unable to control her unnatural urges.

The cast includes Peri Baumeister, Alexander Scheer, Kais Setti, and Dominic Purcell.

Baumeister plays a widow who appears to have leukemia; however, her affliction is even less common and more horrifying. She and her son board a plane where she is going to a treatment facility that could apparently treat her bloodthirsty condition. Her hopes get derailed when the plane gets hijacked. Her curse may be the only weapon she has to protect her son and other passengers.

This is one of the better horror films I have seen recently. It is from a German production company, so that is kind of interesting. Purcell was only cast member I recognized from the television series Prison Break.

Anyway, the visual effects were pretty good. The transformation that Baumeister undergoes was quite impressive.

It’s a pretty gruesome piece of work, but there seemed to be some restraint exercised.

Scheer also deserves a specific shout-out for his performance as one of the hijackers known as Eightball. He seemed to get into his role and was genuinely disturbing.

There are moments between the mother and child that are quite heartbreaking and well-performed. The young actor, Carl Koch, gets a little too shrill at times, but he does a pretty good job overall.

It’s a strange, chaotic script, but it turned out to be a pretty compelling and suspenseful film. If one enjoys vampires mixed with hijacked airplanes, this is a film to not ignore.

Book Review: A Gruesome Delivery

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith is another interesting installment in the Cormoran Strike series and is likely the most gruesome case yet. Strike is a former military investigator who has a prosthetic leg after losing his original limb to a bomb. He is a struggling private investigator who has also gained some notoriety after solving some high-profile murder cases in London. He has recently partnered with a former temp worker named Robin Ellacott, who has really been a huge assistance to the business.

Speaking of amputated legs, this little mystery begins with a severed leg showing up at Strike’s office. Strike quickly determines that one of his old adversaries is making a twisted attempt to rattle or threaten him. The reaction that Robin has when Strike comes up with four candidates capable of such a heinous act in his past is sort of amusing in a dark way.

More of Strike and Robin’s past is revealed here. Their friendship deepens until a seemingly rash decision threatens to wreck the trust they have built.

Robin’s upcoming wedding to a snarky Brit named Matthew is also on the brink of heartbreak. I am not sure if Galbraith is going to have a romantic union occur between Strike and Robin, but the progression in their relationship is compelling.

This is the third installment in the series, and Galbraith is getting better at fleshing out these characters.

Cormoran Strike is a pretty solid investigator in spite of his handicaps and hang-ups. I find him more likable and compelling with each novel. His relationship with Robin is just complicated enough to make things even more interesting.

There are some moments where the story is dragged down by a little too much exposition, but it’s not unforgivable. Most novels that come close to five hundred pages have that tendency. Galbraith’s writing style is just engaging enough to make the effort worth it.

Of course, Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, the mastermind behind the Harry Potter franchise. I have yet to read her most well-known works, but her works featuring Strike also showcases a formidable talent behind her keyboard.

Career of Evil also features an interesting homage throughout to the music of the band Blue Oyster Cult. Rowling seems to have a quirky imagination when it comes to adding quotes or pop culture references.

This is a pretty good addition to the series, and the tumultuous relationship between Strike and Robin is often as compelling as whatever investigation is at the center of the plot.

Eventually, I will get to the fourth novel, but not just yet.

Film Review: Captain America Sees Red

Captain America: Brave New World is the latest film added to Marvel Studio’s list of mildly entertaining cinematic experiences in a still over-saturated superhero market. It is a little better than I had heard but not by much.

There are five credited screenwriters for this, including the director, Julius Ornah. The other collaborators are Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Mussan, and Peter Glanz.

Anthony Mackie has succeeded Chris Evans as the new Captain America. His superhero moniker in the previous MCU films was the Falcon. Now, he is the new Captain America since the previous one, Steve Rogers, went back in time to be with his lost love and bequeathed his shield to Sam Wilson. Anyway, other cast members include Harrison Ford as now-President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Nelson reprises his role from The Incredible Hulk film of 2008, which was Dr. Samuel Sterns, a super-intelligent villain who was grievously wronged by Ross for many years.

An old friend of Wilson’s is brainwashed into attempting to assassinate the president. A treaty with Japan falls into peril as they negotiate the handling of a new element known as adamantium. Ross had invited Wilson to a summit at the White House, wanting to discuss the chances of rebuilding the Avengers. The assassination attempt sparks an investigation that leads Captain America to an enemy who was kept in secret. Ross also has to fight off a frightening transformation triggered by his ingestion of gamma radiation. The new Captain America will have quite a fight on his hands to protect his country and the world from enemies within his own government.

Mackie is actually a talented actor and does his best with this role, but I didn’t find his character to be all that interesting. His angst about replacing the previous Captain America is somewhat predictable. He performs his fight scenes quite well. He seems to have trained quite hard to make some of those moves seem so effortless. My lack of enthusiasm for this portrayal has more to do with the writing than Mackie’s casting.

Harrison Ford predictably does a solid job as Thaddeus Ross, a role he took over from the late William Hurt. The previously mentioned frightening transformation is in the trailer, so I am not spoiling much by saying that he becomes the Red Hulk, which is pretty well realized with the assistance of CGI and whatever other special effects gizmos are involved.

I guess I was also distracted by the realization that it took five screenwriters to cobble this thing together. Parts of it did feel a little tacked together.

The film manages to avoid being completely terrible. There are some interesting moments peppered throughout.

Sterns was kind of an interesting adversary with a legitimate beef. Of course, the problem is that he was willing to tolerate a lot of collateral damage for his understandable desire for revenge. Nelson was quite effectively creepy at times. It was nice to see some previously dangling threads from The Incredible Hulk get tied off.

The fight scenes were well done, but Marvel films tend to be consistently effective in that arena.

Overall, the film has some good points such as casting and a semi-interesting plot, but the editing, some of the dialogue, and a rather underwhelming cameo are a little too clumsy for me to forgive.
