Film Review: The Multitudes Within Chuck Krantz

The Life of Chuck us in the running to become one of the best movies of 2025, in my humble opinion. Mike Flanagan is the screenwriter and director of this piece, which is adapted from a novella written by a not-so-new writer named Stephen King. Tom Hiddleston is in the lead role alongside the child actors portraying the younger versions of Charles Krantz. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Mark Hamill, and Annalise Basso are part of the formidable cast.

The story unfolds from the end when Ejiofor’s character, Marty Anderson, notices some strange sights in the world around him. There is a serious increase in natural disasters, and the internet has completely collapsed. There are some peculiar advertisements cropping up depicting a picture of a man named Chuck Krantz, a seemingly normal accountant. As Chuck lies near death from a terminal brain tumor, the stars are blinking out, and the universe seems to be just shutting down.

Then, the story moves earlier in the Chuck’s life to a strange but uplifting impromptu dance performance before a street drummer. Then, Chuck’s childhood is laid out. All of this is helped by a narrator, Nick Offerman, who does a fantastic job of guiding the audience on this strange journey.

The novella is part of a collection by Stephen King entitled If It Bleeds. The film probably follows the source material pretty closely. There are some interesting twists and a few surprises throughout the film

The performances were solid and believable. The significant cast members were well-chosen. There was a kind of interesting subtlety to some of the performances during some of the more emotionally charged moments of the movie.

The film does seem to have a bit of a slow start, but it gets more engaging as it unfolds in its unconventional timeline. The three kids who played Chuck’s adolescent years did a great job as well. Flanagan has done quite a few adaptations of King’s works and seems to be pretty reliable. I do not recall being disappointed in some of his other works.

I have not read the novella, but I imagine that it is an example of how King actually demonstrates some variety in his writings.

I will also admit that I did not really recognize Mark Hamill as Chuck’s grandfather until the end credits came up. I thought he was familiar, but I was not sure why. Hamill is not someone who I consider to be a stellar actor, but he did quite well in this one. Maybe, he has actually gotten better in immersing himself in a role over the years, and I just failed to appreciate it.

Anyway, this film does deserve the acclaim it has received. It is certainly better than most of the nonsense coming out of Hollywood these days.

Doctor Who Audio Review: Hooklight Will Not Be Dimmed Easily

Doctor Who-Hooklight 2 brings a twelve-episode audio saga from Big Finish Productions to a most satisfying close. Tom Foley has done quite well with writing a very lengthy audio drama featuring the Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison. Janet Fielding, Matthew Waterhouse, and Sarah Sutton continue to bring formidable performances in their roles as Tegan, Adric, and Nyssa, respectively. Ken Bentley returns to the director’s position with his extensive experience with this company.

We also have Paul McGann in the mix as the Eighth Doctor, who is also using the moniker, the Oracle. Alan Cox, Kieren Bew, Shogo Miyakita, Celia Imrie, and Theo Solomon are included in the guest cast.

The force known as Hooklight is attempting to control Nyssa. The Doctor and his friends have been scattered throughout various planets and times. They have to make their way to something called the Dark Forge where they must face the Oracle. The Oracle knows the Doctor quite well, and their connection is much deeper than the Time Lord can anticipate. The Doctor has to find a way to free his friend from the influence of the Hooklight and reunite with his TARDIS. Of course, forces are aligned against the Time Lord, and it will take all of centuries of experience and cleverness to keep a certain light from being lit.

Foley used the extra time quite effectively to explore the main characters and the significant guest characters. We get to see how Tegan fares in a long-term relationship, which is quite interesting and even moving at times.

The appearance of the Eighth Doctor is also well-handled, and Foley sort of avoids some of the usual tropes whenever a story features more than one incarnation. Paul McGann is still compelling and has a perfect voice for audio performances. He is just an interesting actor all around.

I thought the Fifth Doctor was an interesting choice to create a huge saga around, but it works quite well. I also thought Waterhouse was particularly good at almost sounding as he did when he originally played Adric forty years ago.

Davison’s voice has aged and deepened noticeably, but I think he makes a good choice in not trying too hard to imitate his younger self. I still enjoyed his performance, and there was an interesting and poignant moment between the Doctor and Imrie’s Kessica Myles. The Doctor has figured out that Myles is terminally ill and offers to be there for her if she needed to grieve her situation. It was a moment of sensitivity from the Doctor that would often be absent from the television series. It was beautifully performed because the emotional significance was played with that famous British subtlety.

I: am usually rather leery of this superlong sagas in Doctor Who because there is some drag. Although there are some moments that it strikes me how long this thing is going on, I enjoyed this one very much.

Big Finish chose to release this in two parts. If more of these hefty stories are to be produced, I think I would prefer the whole story to be released at once. I hope that Foley is willing to do another one of that size because he really seems to rise to the challenge.

Hooklight as a whole is likely to be the best release of the year. There is still plenty of releases to be announced, but this one will likely remain in the top tier of my favorites for some time.

Book Review: Lew Archer Takes The Case

The Archer Files provided me with a welcome introduction to an author I had not read before. This is apparently the definitive collection of short stories by Ross MacDonald that feature his best-known private eye character, Lew Archer.

There are several stories and other material in this volume, so I don’t have the time and patience to analyze each entry. I will just merely recommend for any mystery fans to try this volume out.

There is a rather helpful and interesting biographical profile of Archer written by Tom Nolan, who edits and reviews crime fiction and apparently has done a thorough account of MacDonald in the past. I guess he is one of these experts in crime fiction. He seems to be a pretty good writer in his own right. I had no real issues with his introduction.

There are a dozen short stories that follow. Some are better than others, as one would expect, however none stand out as being really bad. Archer himself is pretty typical of other fictional, hard-boiled, protagonists of the era of the early Cold War days and the subsequent decades. He is does have a cool blend of toughness and intelligence. Archer is no slouch when it comes to his knowledge of literature and culture, but he’s certainly no push-over. He is a likable enough hero, and I will likely peruse a novel or two before long.

A somewhat more intriguing feature of this volume is a section known as the Case Notes. These are stories that MacDonald started and either just not finished or recycled the ideas into other works. It was interesting and a little annoying t the same time in that there were several stories that I was really wanting to know the resolution.

I am not sure that Ross MacDonald really broke much new ground in the genre at the time of his publications, but I can certainly see how he earned whatever acclaim he enjoyed during his lifetime. MacDonald died in 1983, and his real name was Kenneth Miller.

MacDonald certainly was not lacking in his writing talent. From what little research I did, it does seem that MacDonald has held in quite high esteem in the world of crime fiction, and as near as I can tell from my so far limited exposure to his works, that reverence from his peer seems pretty justified.

I am moving on to another highly regarded, long-standing crime writer who is still very much alive and quite prolific. It has been a couple of years, but I think it’s time to revisit Easy Rawlins as he gets himself into a bit more trouble with A Red Death by the formidable Walter Mosley.

Film Review: Some Accountants Crunch More Than Just Numbers

Ben Affleck returns as killer accountant Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2 directed by Gavin O’Conner. Bill Dubuque is the screenwriter. Jon Bernthal returns as the estranged, and probably just as dangerous, brother, Braxton. Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Robert Morgan, and Grant Harvey join in the fray. J.K. Simmons has a brief appearance in the beginning.

Christian Wollf is autistic and is high functioning in the most lethal ways. He is asked by a former ally from the first movie to help her figure out why her mentor was murdered. It doesn’t take Christian long to determine a pretty complicated human trafficking situation is going on. Another assassin named Anais is also in the game, but she has amnesia to go along with her own dangerous skill set. Christian calls upon his brother, with whom he has a troubled relationship, to bring his own deadly talents to the table. Now, the players are on the board, the hunt is on, and the Accountant is about to balance the books with a lot of firepower.

As far as sequels go, this is a better one. Affleck does pull off bringing a certain vulnerability to this character in spite of the brutality he exercises. I did find Bernthal’s performance a little too manic at times, but I did find the unconventional brotherly relationship rather interesting.

The fight scenes were pretty slick, even if they were a little fanciful. The climax of the film where the Wolff brothers just storm this compound where children were being imprisoned in Mexico was pretty cool. Some criminals just deserve the kind of brutal attention that Christian and Braxton are so good at dishing out.

The film does have its slow moments periodically, but there are some moments that are almost charming. A scene where Christian ends up line dancing with a pretty girl in a bar seems kind of odd, but it worked for me.

There were some moments where the brothers tried to connect a bit, and those moments were rather poignant.

If another film turns up, I don’t think I will roll my eyes with the same level of derision I have when these announcements are made.

Film Review: Sometimes You Need More Than One Sensei

Karate Kid: Legends has some pretty cool scenes and character moments, but the plot logistics are quite questionable. Jonathan Entwistle directed this film, which was written by Rob Leiber. The new kid is played by Ben Wang, and he is actually a pretty good choice. Ralph Macchio returns to The Karate Kid franchise as Daniel LaRusso, fresh off the completion of the series Cobra Kai. Jackie Chan reprises his role of Mr. Han from the 2010 The Karate Kid film.

The cast also includes Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, and Aramis Knight.

The movie begins with a flashback scene in which Mr. Miyagi explains to a young LaRusso the connection his family has to the Han Family. When we’re caught up to the present day, Mr. Han has returned to kung fu instruction fulltime and is doing quite well. One of his students is a great nephew named Li Fong who has been carrying a burden of guilt. His mother has accepted a job in New York as a doctor, so Li has another big adjustment to make in his life.

As usual, he meets a pretty girl and runs afoul of her ex-boyfriend, who is a karate expert. Li is also quite skilled in the martial arts, but this adversary may be better. Mr. Han eventually shows up in the Big Apple to lend a hand in training his nephew for the expected big tournament. He feels that he could use some help and take a quick trip to California to recruit Daniel LaRusso to give his expertise to Li’s training.

There is a lot in this film I liked. The newer characters were actually pretty good. Sadie Stanley was pretty entertaining as Mia, the cheeky but charming love interest. Her relationship with her father, played by Joshua Jackson, was pretty endearing as well. A friendship between Li and the father develops as well, which seems to be a break from the trope in these types of stories.

Ben Wang has quite a bit of charisma to go along with his martial arts skill. It was also great to see Ming-Na Wen in the role of Li’s mother. The mother was pretty dead set against her son continuing his martial arts study, but one can have a bit more sympathy for her once the reason is revealed. Also, Wen is just great to watch. It’s pretty hard to believe that she is just over sixty, but she is Asian and obviously takes well care of herself.

The fight scenes are unrealistic but still fun to watch. The good-natured bickering between LaRusso and Han was also well played by Macchia and Chan.

For the most part, I enjoyed the film, however the plot needs some serious examination. First of all, it’s not really clear what is so unique about Li’s situation that Han felt compelled to seek assistance from LaRusso. The whole idea to get the two sensei in the same place seems rather strange and frankly hard to swallow.

I could almost buy a more coincidental meeting more than Han taking a quick trip to California to make his pitch to LaRusso.

The film does hit the right chords of nostalgia, but I had to fight for that enjoyment since I was pretty distracted by the weak elements in the plot.

Anyway, it’s another one in which I did not find terrible, but a better, more credible reason needed to be found for Han and LaRusso to meet.

Big Finish Audio Review: On The Isle Of The Dead, Morbius Lives Again

Dark Gallifrey: Morbius Part Two is the continuation of a trilogy of audio dramas from Big Finish Productions that seems to be a very promising and poignant piece of entertainment. The series explores various Time Lords from Doctor Who and delves into the history of their home planet and their roles. The warlord known as Morbius appeared in the television series during the Tom Baker era, and now we get a taste of his history.

The story is written by Tom Foley and directed by Samuel Clemens. Samuel West is in the title role with Mina Anwar, Rachel Atkins, Justin Avoth, Mark Bonnar, Andrew French, Janet Henfrey, Lara Lemon, and Hywel Morgan making up the rest of the cast.’

The Gallifreyan battleship known as the Proteus has crashed into a realm known as the Isle of the Dead. The crew members find themselves in more peril than they understand when an old enemy thought dead is about to be resurrected. Captain Argento, played by Rachel Atkins, finds herself facing down doubts from her crew and her own health concerns. Meanwhile, the cult of Morbius is awaiting the return of their idol, and the galaxy is in the direst of jeopardies.

I don’t normally enjoy much Doctor Who that doesn’t feature the Doctor, but this is becoming rather fascinating. West has played Morbius in some previous audio plays, so it makes sense to continue to have him stretch himself a little further. West does a great job.

The story is actually supposed to remind the audience of the old sea adventures. The crew of the Proteus aren’t pirates really, but the mannerisms of the characters sort of put forth that vibe. Big Finish almost always gets the casting right, and this adventure is no exception. I kind of find the first mate, Mr. Middlewitch, a rather compelling character. Hywel Morgan has that role and just seems to relish it. I also think the name Middlewitch is kind of cool.

Anyway, I will soon be listening to the third and final episode of this ongoing series. Dark Gallifrey has delivered on an intriguing premise, and I am fascinated to hear the fate of the crew of the Proteus.

Doctor Who Audio Review: The Light That Must Never Be Lit

Big Finish Productions has started the Fifth Doctor on a very epic audio adventure with Tim Foley’s Doctor Who-Hooklight 1. Peter Davison is joined by Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, and Matthew Waterhouse. Ken Bentley returns to the role of director. There is a very intriguing surprise with Paul McGann lurking the shadows of the story as the Eighth Doctor. The guest cast is also impressive with Kieren Bow, Alan Cox, Ruby Crepin-Glyn, David Holt, Celia Imrie, Harriet Kershaw, David Shaw-Parker, Theo Solomon, and Issy Van Randwyck.

This release if the first six episode of what is going to be a whopping twelve when it is all over.

The TARDIS crew has basically landed unwilling on a planet called Morning. The Doctor has become aware of the presence of ancient and powerful substance known as Hooklight. Tegan, Nysse, and Adric are caught up in one of the Doctor’s more epic adventures that could lead to the end of all of the universe. The Doctor rarely plays for lower stakes. There is a being known as the Oracle, and he seems to know the Doctor very well.

This is a very promising story. The main cast puts in a typically compelling performance. Peter Davison is a solid performer, but he seems a little more energetic than usual with this one. Waterhouse is now a man in his sixties playing a teen-ager, and he kind of pulls it off. He sounds very much like he did when he first started in the role in the early 1980’s. Fielding and Sutton remain consistently enjoyable as Tegan and Nyssa.

The soundscape is well executed, but Big Finish has a lot of practice with that. I rarely notice any real problems on the technical end with their recordings,

There is a second half to this story to be released soon, and I am pretty anxious to hear that one. I am a little leery of having more than one Doctor in an episode, but Big Finish is usually considerably more successful in the writing of these adventures than what was aired on the television series. Paul McGann is also pretty much guaranteed to deliver his own captivating performance.

Hooklight appears to be on track to hold a special place in the hearts of Big Finish listeners. It’s a long one and will require a bit of patience, but I am enjoying the journey to unravel the layers of mystery alongside this Doctor and his companions.

Book Review: Myron Nets A Killer

Drop Shot by Harlan Coben is a pretty engaging and straight-forward murder mystery featuring that sleuthing sports agent, Myron Bolitar. It was first published in 1996 and is the second novel in the series with Bolitar as the protagonist.

Bolitar is representing a rising star in the realm of professional tennis when another former player is gunned down just outside a stadium where an important match was being played. Bolitar had missed a recent message from this young woman named Valerie Simpson, who was wanting some assistance to return to competitive tennis. She is murdered with a few yards of where Myron was seated watching his client dominate the court alongside his mysterious and dangerous best friend, Windsor Horne Lockwood III, known as Win. Win is described by a belligerent police detective as a psycho yuppie. Win has no discernible conscience or sense of mercy when crossed. He is a financial guru and enjoys the finer things in life, but he is capable of the most brutal forms of vengeance when he or Myron is threatened.

Anyway, Bolitar finds himself drawn to the investigation of Valerie’s murder when he learns that he has a talent for investigation. He has a small but successful business as a sports agent, but he has an eclectic, small group of allies and a nose for trouble.

Bolitar is an interesting and likable protagonist, but Win is the most fascinating of sidekicks. Their friendship also seems unlikely in many ways, but sometimes relationships are like that.

Bolitar’s sense of integrity when representing his clients seems a little too good to be true, but I liked Coben’s optimism in his description. I hope there are sports agent who actually care about their clients’ well-being in real life.

The murder of Valerie Simpson seems to have some roots tied to another murder six years before that concerned the con of United States senator. Bolitar finds himself coming across mob bosses, a corrupt senator, and a troublesome detective in his pursuit of the truth.

Coben planted some pretty well thought out red herrings in the plot. Although it is fairly easy to tell how early this novel is in Coben’s now lengthy writing career, it is still quite engaging. There is little about Coben’s writing style that seems uncommon among his peers in this genre, but the novel is competently written and is enjoyable.

Coben has rightfully earned the success he enjoys. He does seem to give his readers a credible glimpse in the world of professional sports. I still have yet to figure out how the scoring in tennis actually works, but I do seem a little better understanding how the business side of that industry works.

I have yet to read this series in order, so I have to fill in some gaps on my own. I recently read a more recent Bolitar novel, so I am not quite following the progression of this guy’s life journey all that well.

Drop Shot may fall short of any real literary excellence, but it does accomplish the purpose of entertaining and keeping the audience in suspense quite effectively. It’s a pretty good mystery, and I will join Myron Bolitar on another unlikely investigation in the near future.

I can’t get enough of misdeeds and murder in my literary indulgences, so I am going to try out the works of a more classic crime writer that I have never read before. I am going to peruse The Archer Files, which is a collection of short stories written by Ross MacDonald and features his best-known creation, private eye Lew Archer. This anthology was compiled by MacDonald’s biographer, Tom Nolan, who also has what I am sure will be a fascinating essay and overview of Archer’s exploits.

Film Review: AI Versus The IMF

Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning is a pretty fun cinematic experience as long as one doesn’t examine the actual plot too closely. Tom Cruise returns as super operative, Ethan Hunt, leader of the Impossible Missions Force, with Christopher McQuarrie as director. McQuarrie also co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen.

This film continues the storyline which began in the immediate predecessor, Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames also return as Benjo Dunn and Luther Stickell, respectively. Hayley Atwell is back to help Ethan against the battle against a powerful Artificial Intelligence known as the Entity. Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, and Greg Tarzan Davis are included in the cast.

When the film starts, Ethan Hunt has been in hiding for a few months after taking possession of a vital component to controlling the Entity. He rejoins his team and spends much of film trying to stay ahead of Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, who is trying to stop Ethan from achieving his ultimate goal of neutralizing the Entity. Ethan will have to decide who or what may be sacrificed in order to save the world from the Entity’s dominion.

As usual, there are some astonishing and sometimes ludicrous action sequences that are definitely eye-catching. Cruise puts out a strong performance which is likely his last turn as Ethan Hunt. This film is being touted as the final one in the franchise, but when it comes to Hollywood, who can say for sure?

The film is a bit of a jumble when it comes to the plot. There are some engaging callbacks to the earlier installments. Rolf Saxon reprises a role from the first film that was not much more than a cameo, and he has much more substantial part to play here.

There are times when the transition to different locations seems a little jarring, but the film is pretty long anyway. McQuarrie throws in quite a bit of death-defying moments in this film that almost makes it to three hours.

The problem is that Hunt at times seem too superhuman for the suspension of disbelief to be maintained. Although these films are not really designed to be grounded in reality, it is still a bit distracting when Hunt gets himself in some of these outlandish predicaments.

I thought Morales was pretty well cast as the main villain. There was nothing too spectacular about his performance, but he was not particularly bad either.

Overall, I was glad to have made it to the likely end of this franchise, or at least the end of this phase. It’s a film with some flaws and falls short of any real artistic greatness, however it was an enjoyable diversion from the daily pressures of real life. It certainly is better than many of the recent films I have seen.

Book Review: London Is All Grown Up

Edward Rutherford’s London is quite a literary feat with a page count that is over eleven hundred. It’s a great showcase for Rutherford’s prose style.

Rutherford takes his readers back to the time of Julius Caesar and creates several families as his vessels for exploring the rise and development of the great city of London. He creates quite a tapestry of historical events and personal struggles experienced by his numerous characters in his narrative.

Although this novel was not without moments of sluggishness in the plot, it is still an enjoyable reading experience on the whole. It was pretty thrilling to come across some of the historical events I recognized as not being that well-remembered. There are a lot of threads of which to keep track, and the sudden shifts in perspective kind of made things a little tricky.

There is no question that Rutherford is a talented storyteller. He also seems to have done an impressive amount of research which is laid out quite nicely.

It is a daunting book for many people, and I struggled a bit with retention of certain aspects of the novel. I think that may be more of an issue with my attention span rather than any downfall of the author.

I usually read simpler novels for my leisure time, but I like to challenge myself a couple of times a year at least, and London did satisfy that prescription. Even though I had some hurtles throughout the experience, I did enjoy the book and would recommend further examination of his other works. It may be a little while before I circle back to Mr. Rutherford, but I have no plans to avoid his other works. I was rather pleased with being able to take this on and stick with it.

I think it’s time to draw Harlan Coben out of the reading queue with Drop Shot, which features that sleuthing sports agent, Myron Bolitar.
